ESSSAT is a scholarly, non-confessional organization, based in Europe, which aims to promote the study of relationships between the natural sciences and theological views. ESSSAT has members from almost every European country as well as members from other continents. They have different confessional backgrounds, and may include believers as well as non-believers and atheists. As scientists, theologians, philosophers and historians they work on a better understanding of the interactions between two of the most powerful human pursuits, namely religion and science."

Die Udo Keller Stiftung Forum Humanum stiftete für die Jahre 2012 und 2014 den „ESSSAT Prize“ für herausragende Forschungsleistungen auf dem Gebiet Religion/Naturwissenschaft (Dotierung: 5.000 EUR).

Der ESSSAT Research Prize 2012 wurde verliehen an Dr. Anna Ijjas für ihre Arbeit Der Alte mit dem Würfel: Ein Beitrag zur Metaphysik der Quantenmechanik. Der ESSSAT Student Prize 2012 ging an Annemarie van Stee für ihre Arbeit Philosophical anthropological assumptions in cognitive neuroscience of self. Die Preise wurden verliehen auf der Konferenz "What is Life?", die vom 24. - 29. April 2012 in Tartu stattfand.

Die Verleihung des ESSSAT Research Prize 2014 erfolgte im Mai 2014 in Assisi. Im Rahmen der jährlichen Fachkonferenz zum Thema „Do Emotions Shape The World?“ (30.4.-4.5.2014) wurde der Preis an Dr. Patrizia Bennett (Oxford University) für ihre Arbeit zum Thema „Religion and Medical Science“ überreicht.
